Wheel Alignment / Balancing & Tracking? What are they, why do you need them?

wheel alignment

You may have heard people talking about wheel alignment or wheel balancing or wheel tracking without having the foggiest idea what they were on about. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! This guide will explain the difference and why you might need to get one or both done. And next time the topic comes up in conversation, you’ll be quite the expert!

So let’s start off with the basics. What’s the difference between the two?

Wheel Alignment / Tracking

In a nutshell, wheel alignment or wheel tracking is about checking the direction and angle of your wheels to make sure they’re parallel. IN’n’OUT technicians can adjust your track rod ends to make sure the wheel alignment is correct. Wheels can become misaligned as a result of various road conditions such as potholes and speed bumps, while uneven braking, wheel inbalance and uneven tyre wear can also be contributing factors.

Wheel Balancing:

In simple terms, wheel balancing makes sure the weight of each wheel is even and that the wheels are rotating evenly. If your wheels are out of balance our technicians may need to add small balancing weights to the rims of your wheels to even up any inbalance.

What happens if your wheels are unbalanced or misaligned?

As you know, tyres are a pretty important part of a car and they keep you stuck to the road, so it’s vital that they’re looked after. If they’re not well aligned, you may find that your car doesn’t naturally drive in a straight line. Having them realigned means you’re more likely to stay on the straight and narrow rather than veering into people’s gardens (or oncoming traffic) when you’re out on the road!

If your wheels aren’t well balanced, you might feel a vibration through the steering wheel when you hit certain speeds, and this can make driving pretty uncomfortable. Added to that, imbalanced wheels may damage your steering and suspension as well as causing your tyres to wear prematurely.

How often do I need to check my wheel balance and alignment?

We recommend that you have your wheel alignment and balance checked at least once a year. You’re likely to save money in the long run as your car will be safer and better maintained. Your tyres are also likely to last longer if your wheels are well aligned. It’s a good idea to get your tyres balanced whenever you need one replacing.
