MOT Test

As you may or may not know, MOTs in the UK are set for a series of changes, commencing 20th May of this year.

So in order to best prepare you for your future MOTs at IN’n’OUT Autocentres, the following will tell you all you need to know about the upcoming changes.

MOT test faults will now be classified as Minor, Major & Dangerous. ‘Minor’ faults will simply act as an advisory does now, with ‘Major’ and ‘Dangerous’ faults resulting in an automatic failure.

DVSA definitions

The DSA definitions of each fault are classified below:

FAULT: Dangerous‘a direct and immediate risk to road safety or has a serious impact on the environment’

SOLUTION: Do not drive until the vehicle has been repaired

FAULT: Major – ‘It may affect the vehicle’s safety, put other road users at risk or have an impact on the environment’

SOLUTION: Repair it immediately

FAULT: Minor‘No significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment’

SOLUTION: Repair as soon as possible

FAULT: Advisory‘It come before more serious in the future’

SOLUTION: Monitor & repair if necessary

FAULT: Pass‘It meets the minimum legal standard’

SOLUTION: Make sure it continues to meet the standard

Additionally, the DVSA have declared that the following will now be tested under the new MOT guidelines:

  • If tyres are obviously under inflated
  • If the brake fluid has been contaminated
  • For fluid leaks posing an environmental risk
  • Brake pad warning lights and if brake pads or discs are missing
  • Reversing lights on vehicles first used from September 2009
  • Headlight washers on vehicles first used from September 2009
  • Daytime running lights on vehicles first used from March 2018
